RS50 2021

The 2021 event raised almost £9,000 despite significant increases in costs. As every year 50% is donated to the Strathaven Scouts and Guides to help support the groups with the upkeep of the hall, etc. The other 50% is donated to charities such as HHI who we have supported for many years and who directly deliver amazing “on the ground” projects. They have used our recent Round Strathaven donations towards building this house (now complete) for the headmaster of the Nanga school for handicapped children in Zambia. Prior to this the headmaster was sleeping on the floor of the classroom in a cardboard box! Below is an email he sent to HHI which demonstrates the huge impact your participation in the Round Strathaven has:

“On behalf of PTA members, teachers, pupils and indeed my own behalf, I am expressing our profound gratitude to your organization for helping with the above mentioned items. However, the positive effects of those donations to the school as follows:The dining hall has provided sanity in as a far as preparation of food for learners is concerned. Before the construction of the dining hall, our pupils used to take their meals outside on the ground and this was a very sorry and stressful sight. The current situation where our pupils ate feeding from the dining hall and seated on benches with tables has brought smiles and happiness in the lives of learners.Construction of the house has positively made works easily for me in that it is easy to supervise the teachers throughout because l am always available in the school The construction of the house has motivated me highly because I am now with the family unlike the previous experience where I was divided between two worlds. Foot paths and ramps has made life for pupils on wheelchairs and the blind easy because they are able to move from one point to another easily especially during the rainy season. The current situation is encouraging because even a blind child can easily explore the school because of the foot paths and ramps. Improvements in water system has made the school to get involved in gardening because of water. Through gardening we are able to teach learners survival skills they can use in the future to make a living in case, they failed to make it academically. Gardening is also helping the school to raise money and supplement the diet of the learners. The toilets built at school has made it possible for learners to have rooms of convenience that are tailored for children with special educational needs. Previously our learners used to use makeshift toilets with poor hygiene and ventilation. The procurement of the gas stove and cylinder has made work for house parents easy in that they can now prepare meals within shortest possible time. Previously house parents, were taking two hours to prepare meals but currently it’s taking them forty minutes to prepare meals and this has helped both house parents and teachers to improve on time management.”

Post race update and 2020 date

Many thanks again to everyone that participated in this year’s events and to those entrants who couldn’t make it for various reasons (as you can see from below your entry money still has benefitted some great causes). The weather made it one of the tougher years but the amazing positivity of those crossing the finish line was fantastic! Please post any photos or comments on our Facebook page

Firstly a date for your diary – Next year’s Round Strathaven 50 & 15 will take place on Sunday 23rd August2020. Entry Central will open for entries in early 2020 (I will email to advise nearer the time).

This year saw the biggest number of bikes on the road to date (over 650) and you helped raise an incredible £13,000 for charity! We must run the lowest cost event in Scotland with everything from the donations of the amazing cakes to our dedicated marshals time given freely. Support by local Strathaven businesses is vital as is the brilliant technical support and recovery provided by Dales Cycles.

The beneficiaries this year are:

  • Strathaven Scouts = £2,500 which will be used for maintaining the hall and equipment.
  • Strathaven Guides = £2,500 which similarly will be used for maintaining the hall and equipment.
  • HHI = £3,000. We have worked with this small charity for several years. They deliver some incredible projects primarily in India and like the RS50 have a very low cost base.
  • Kasin = £1,000. A very similar charity to HHI who we have assisted in the past but based in Nepal.
  • South Lanarkshire Samaritans = £1,000 which will directly support the running costs of the local centre.

The balance is being retained for two purposes. Firstly we are planning on purchasing and locating a storage container on ground donated by Strathaven Rugby Club as we desperately need space to store the huge number of signs, etc. The final balance will become part of our community fund used for micro grants supporting local projects.

We hope you agree that your effort (and enjoyment) has benefited a wide range of deserving causes. Thanks again for your support and look forward to seeing you next year.

Volunteers Required

Each year the event raises over £10,000 for various charities both local and international, this would not be possible without the large number of volunteers who help with the running of the event in various ways such as marshalling, registration on the day and don’t forget providing the delicious home baking that keeps everyone going on the day of the event. So a massive thankyou to all those who already give up their time to help make the event such a success.

Looking to the future we are always looking for additional supporters, anyone interested in joining our current team of enthusiastic volunteers please send an email to supporters@roundstrathaven50.org.uk Even if you can only spare a few hours on the day there are always opportunities where an extra pair of hands can make what is already a very popular event even better.

Updated Arrangements for this years Event.

Due to the closure of the old Kirkland Park primary school, the organisers have had to move the Registration Point to Strathaven Academy. This is off Bowling Green road, post code ML10 6DP.
The start location will remain the same as in previous years, and participants are asked to congregate on the grass area by the old Kirkland Park Primary School after registration, as before.
The finish will now be along Crawford Street, and will be well signposted and marshalled.
All details of the changes will be provided to participants in the event documents e-mailed out prior to the event.

The detailed route is available on the route page.
